QR Code for a YouTube Video: how it works
Video explains things that paper cannot: how to assemble the product, what the course covers, how the recipe looks when it is done. A QR code on the instruction sheet, the packaging, a conference slide or a classroom handout opens the exact video, and on phones with YouTube installed it plays in the app. Teachers, product makers, musicians and trainers use it constantly.
QRForge makes the code free in your browser. Paste the video link, style it, and download a PNG that never expires.
Getting the right YouTube link
YouTube offers several URLs for the same video. For a QR code, use the short one:
- Video – click Share under the video and copy the youtu.be/VIDEOID link. It is shorter than the watch?v= form, which makes a simpler, faster-scanning code.
- Start at a timestamp – tick "Start at" in the Share dialog; the link gains ?t=90 and opens at that second. Useful when one long video covers several steps.
- Channel – use your handle URL, youtube.com/@yourchannel, for a code that promotes the whole channel.
- Playlist – copy the playlist link from its Share button; it is long, so expect a denser code and print it a little larger.
Remove tracking parameters like ?si=… that the Share button sometimes appends; they add characters for nothing. Paste the cleaned link into the URL tab and scan the preview to confirm it plays the right video.
Print, slides and video-end-screen use
On printed materials, size the code for the viewing distance: 2 cm on a product insert, 4–5 cm on a handout, 15 cm or more on a poster or trade-show banner. For presentations, put the code on a slide at 20% of the slide height so people at the back of the room can scan it from their seats, and leave it up for at least 15 seconds.
Use YouTube red as the foreground if you want the association, or your own brand colour; both scan well on white. Keep the video public or unlisted; a private video will show an error to everyone who scans. If you later replace the video, the old code will point at a removed video, so for content you expect to re-upload, link to a playlist or a page on your own site instead.
Frequently asked questions
Does the code open the YouTube app or the browser?
On phones with the YouTube app installed, a youtu.be or youtube.com link opens in the app. Otherwise it plays in the browser.
Can the video start at a specific time?
Yes. Use the Start at option in YouTube's Share dialog, or add ?t=SECONDS to the youtu.be link, before generating the code.
Can I make a QR code for an unlisted video?
Yes. Unlisted videos open for anyone with the link, including from a QR code. Private videos do not.
Can I count how many people scanned it?
Not through the code, which is static. YouTube Analytics shows traffic sources, and a short link with statistics as the destination gives you scan counts.
