QR Code for Instagram: how it works
Telling customers to "find us on Instagram" loses most of them to the search box. A QR code that opens your profile directly turns a print touchpoint into a follow: product packaging, event banners, business cards, the shop door, a café's table card. On a phone with the Instagram app installed, the link opens in the app itself.

Which Instagram link to use
Use your plain profile URL: https://www.instagram.com/yourhandle. It is short, it is permanent as long as you keep the handle, and it opens the app when it is installed. A few variants worth knowing:
- A specific post or Reel – copy the link from the share menu (instagram.com/p/… or /reel/…). Good for a campaign, but the code becomes useless once the post is deleted.
- Instagram's own QR code – the app can generate one, but it is Instagram-styled, fixed in size and cannot be downloaded as a clean PNG or SVG for print.
- Link-in-bio pages – fine if you want to offer several destinations, but a direct profile link converts better for a single follow.
Paste the URL in the URL tab, keep https://, and scan the preview on a phone with Instagram installed to confirm it opens in the app.
Design tips that keep the code scannable
Instagram's gradient is tempting, but a QR code must be a single foreground colour on a single background with strong contrast. Pick one brand colour for the modules (a deep magenta or purple reads well) over white or a very pale tint, and choose the Rounded or Dots style for a softer look that matches social branding. A centre logo (Pro) with your profile picture or brand mark makes it instantly recognisable.
Size for the distance: 2 cm on packaging held in the hand, 5 cm on an A5 flyer, 10 cm or more on a poster or window. Add a short caption ("@yourhandle – scan to follow") so people know what they will get, and include the handle in text for anyone who prefers to type. Test with the Instagram app closed and open; both should land on your profile.

Does the QR code open the Instagram app or the website?
On phones with Instagram installed, the profile link opens directly in the app. Without the app, it opens the profile in the browser.
What if I change my Instagram handle?
The old URL stops working and the printed code with it. Pick your handle before printing, or link to a page on your own website that redirects to Instagram so you can update it later.
Can I use the Instagram logo on the QR code?
